Loved The Book, But... (Spoilers)
Posted: 11 Jul 07 11:46 PM
A few things kinda disappointed me.  First and foremost, Lieutenant General Godalgonz.  Here we have this really cool character stepping up to bat, and you think, finally, someone's going to be able to bully Billie...then he gets killed pretty much upon arrival.  I get what you guys were going for with this, but it was still pretty depressing to have such a really cool character offed so soon after he was brought in.

And I wouldn't have minded seeing President Chang-Sturdevant's speech.  Hopefully we'll delve deeper into that in the next book, public reaction to the news and such?

But since I've pissed and moaned, I think it's only fair I talk about the stuff I liked about it, which was considerably more :D

Biggest thing:  Sturgeon and Cazombi releaving Billie of command.  That freaking ROCKED!  I've been praying since before he even took command that that guy would get what's coming to him, and he did.  And for that, I thank you.

I liked how you wrapped up the thing with Charlette and Donnie without spending too terribly much time on them.  As much as I liked their subplot, I'm glad you guys focused more on the war here.

I'm definitely digging some of the new characters, Ymenez chief among them.

One thing I was a little curious about though, we didn't get much screen time with Dean.  Spent a good amount of time with Claypoole and Doyle, but Dean wasn't as big a player as usual.

All in all though, it was great, I can't wait for the next one, finally going back against the Skinks!

Well I think if you look back through the books in the series they always focus on a couple of characters and then switch it up in the next one...keeping the character dynamic going and allowing each one to grow. I think doing it this way really draws us closer to the characters of 3rd platoon and we get really attached to them.

Eric, you have us completely figured out.  But we're not particularly upset by what BOS wrote.  His is a very thoughtful criticism from a reader who really got into the plot.  We'd rather have a reader upset with what we do with a character than neutral because the person who is upset has been drawn to that particular character and that means we're doing our job properly.

The thing with Dean was just more of an observation, since this is the first time he wasn't one of the central ones.  Last time that was was uh...I wanna say Kingdom's Swords, but don't hold me to that.

The only thing that actually rankled me was Godalgonz's death, I really liked him.  Still a kick ass book though.
