Napoleonic Wars
Posted: 22 Jun 09 5:30 PM
A place to discuss my favorite 19th century war in europe, the Napoleonic Wars.

Also would y'all like sepreate threads for other wars such as civil war, ww2: Pacific, ww2: Europe, Vietnam, etc? Not just american wars those are just examples.

What I failed to understand about the Napoleonic wars was this: Why did Napoleon invade Spain? I read the wiki on it but I still can't understand it. Why invade your ally?

The Prime Master read the message again. This time, by the time he finished reading, he smiled beatifically. The message included a great deal of information about the Earthman Army and airpower and their tactics. This was inteligence that would serve the Emperor's army well when it next encountered the Earthman Army. As it most assuredly would.......

As I understand it, Spain was only an ally because he gave them an offer they couldn't refuse.

He invaded Spain to get at Portugaul, in order to cripple the UK by killing off all European trade with them.

So then why not send in his naval forces to attack the english blockade before the failed invasion of England?

At that time, Britain's navy was supreme. Actually, from the mid-18th century until well into the 20th century, the Royal Navy was the most powerful navy in the world, until Britain's economy, messed up thoroughly by the WW2 and by socialist policies, could no longer justify it.

While Napoleon had a navy, and it was not a minor threat to Britain, it was also never a serious threat. At Trafalgar, Nelson was numerically inferior, but in terms of quality of command, experience, and ship condition they were greatly superior. Nelson died at Trafalgar, but of his 33 ships he lost none, whereas the combined French/Spanish fleet lost 22 of 41 ships. The French tried to do something about the blockade, and that was ultimately what Trafalgar was all about, but "Britannia rules the waves."

Interesting. Hmmmm, well Napoleon should of had more allies, like ally with Austria or the confederated states of Germany.
