I think the news media mis-naming of firearms is for pure hyperbole. They think "automatic" means one trigger pull equals multiple bullets regardless of weapon type. In handguns, one trigger pull equals multiple bullets us a machine pistol.

I know machine pistol you can fire multiple bullets. When you pull the trigger for a pistol, it is a one shot burst unless you get those gun that lets you fire three bullet burst.

Why do some games or TV shows define a revolver as hand cannon?
